PathLift support
From Finder to your next task.
Set up the toolbar, choose a format, and keep working.
Getting started
Install PathLift in Applications and open it.
Choose Open Finder Extensions… and enable PathLift in macOS settings.
In Finder, choose View → Customize Toolbar… and add PathLift.
Use the dropdown to copy selected items or the current folder.
Open Settings from PathLift’s clipboard icon in the menu bar.
Choosing how paths copy
Set your regular format under Default copy settings. Use Next copy only for an independent format, separator, or quoting override. It resets after a successful copy; a failed copy keeps your choices. Use defaults for next copy cancels the override.
For Terminal, choose Single quotes when needed. File URLs, SMB URLs, and Windows UNC paths retain their native formatting.
Why is copying unavailable?
The selected-item command is disabled when Finder provides no selection. Recents, searches, and smart folders may not have a current filesystem folder. Open a regular folder and try again.
Network paths and permissions
SMB and UNC formats require a mounted SMB share; local disks cannot be converted by guessing a server name. In Settings, Allow Network Folder… saves read-only permission to look up the share’s metadata. Use Forget Network Permissions and allow the folder again if its location changes or a saved permission no longer works. PathLift does not read file contents or mount shares.
Missing toolbar or menu-bar icon?
Open PathLift and check the extension status in Finder Setup, then customise Finder’s toolbar again. Close and reopen Finder windows after updating. No Dock icon is expected. The setup window can remain closed while you copy paths.
Launch at login
On macOS 13 or later, enable Launch at login in Settings. Finish any approval in macOS Login Items. This is optional: Finder can open PathLift when you use its toolbar action.
Purchase and updates
One upfront purchase includes version 1 and its updates. Version 1 does not expire. Future major versions may be separate optional purchases. Re-download a purchased version using your Apple account in the App Store; there is no separate PathLift account or in-app purchase to restore.
Direct-download edition
The direct edition requests Finder Automation permission to read paths. If access was denied, use Open Finder Privacy Settings… in Finder Setup and enable PathLift in Automation. The App Store edition does not require Finder Automation.
